Elia addresses grid instability

Belgian grid operator Elia is implementing new measures to ensure the stability of the electricity grid. From now on, large battery parks and data centers will be obliged to play an active role in absorbing fluctuations on the grid. The goal is to prevent power outages, or blackouts, and to guarantee security of supply, according to L'Echo.

Impact and Objectives

This obligation is part of Elia's broader strategy to better integrate the growing share of renewable energy sources, which are more intermittent in nature. By utilizing the flexibility of battery parks and the adjustable energy demand of data centers, Elia can react more quickly to unexpected peaks and troughs in energy production and consumption. This approach should prepare Belgium for a future energy system where decentralization and variability play a greater role.
