The city of Antwerp is investing 237 million euros in social housing this year, a sum three times higher than last year's investment. This substantial financial injection is intended to contribute to the ambition of creating 7,500 new social homes within the city.
Antwerp triples budget for social homes
The increased investments in social housing are evident in the port city. Alderman Patrick Janssens (Vooruit) emphasizes the progress, as reported by HLN Antwerpen: “With almost 237 million euros in investments in social housing, we are taking a big step forward this year.” These funds are crucial for alleviating pressure on the Antwerp housing market and making affordable housing more accessible to families most in need.
Flemish investment wave supports local projects
Antwerp's efforts are part of a broader Flemish strategy. Flemish Minister Melissa Depraetere (Vooruit) has already invested more than one billion euros in social housing this year. This exceeds the total amount invested in all of 2025, indicating an accelerated approach at the Flemish level. This coordinated commitment, from both the Flemish government and local authorities like the city of Antwerp, aims for a sustainable expansion of the social housing supply.
Ambition of 7,500 homes remains feasible
Despite the significant and growing need for affordable living space, the ambition to build 7,500 new social housing units remains achievable for the parties involved. The substantial financial resources now being allocated by both the city of Antwerp and the Flemish government are intended to meet this objective and significantly increase the provision of social housing.
